Horse Racing and Seabiscut -- A Hope, A Prayer, and A Horse!
Even though our lives progressively moves forwardon occasion it has a way of working what seems tobe in a backwards motion, yet in the end achievesthe same results. I remember years ago when Istarted my bodybuilding career, I had no self-confidence, poor self-esteem, and an introvertedpersonality. I couldn't fathom doing what othersbelieved I could accomplish in such an unusualsport that went totally against my nature. However, at first I thought, "I didn't want to letthem down and what if they're right? What if Icould accomplish something if I set my mind to it,I asked? What if by believing in something biggerthan myself would allow me to be a better person, develop confidence and be more outgoing?" Thenover a period of time the belief others hadstarted to rub off in me, combined with my workethic the rest became history. I really don't want to compare myself to a horse, but in the movie "Sea Biscuit", a similarexperience takes place. Four men from all togetherdifferent backgrounds come together with a hope, aprayer and a horse of all things. They believedthat with a little direction, Sea Biscuit wouldaccomplish great things and surpass immeasurableodds. So inspired by a few (who happened to begoing by the seat of their pants), Sea Biscuitbegan to believe he too could do great things. The thing is, this horse didn't know nor did hecare that these four men combined had only a handfull of horse sense (no pun intended). Theybelieved in him and that was all that mattered. As Sea Biscuits confidence grew his influence uponthose around him did also. Through Sea Biscuitsdetermination and pure heart many who followed himbegan to believe in themselves in the midst of adepression and many hardships. In some crazyfashion this horse began to change the lives ofthousands of people all because a few men cametogether having a sense of purpose, a little hope,a lot of prayers and a horse to get them there. If an animal like Sea Biscuit could influencepeople, can you imagine what Jesus Christ can dowith you? Hebrews 11 says, "that our life withChrist is built upon what we believe not by whatwe see." At times in our Christian walk we needthose around us that believe in Christ, in us andhave a little faith even when we can't see ourfuture. Hopefully, if you are willing, sooner orlater that confidence rubs off and we take hold ofGods will for our lives. That's why small groupsand close Christian friends are so important inour walk with Christ. Other people can be the gluethat holds us together when at times we seem to befalling apart. As in horse racing so it is in ourlife with Christ, it's not the start that countsit's finishing strong. Never underestimate the power of small groups andclose friends. If it weren't for small groups, close friends and people who believe in me, therehave been times during this past year, I don'tknow what I would have done without them all.Never turn down an invitation from God tofellowship with a close group of friends, participate in an ABF class, or just share somequality time praying and believing in something orsomeone. Those four men never knew how far a hope,a prayer and a horse could go, but with God allthings are possible. All One; All Different -- Addressing Spiritual Reductionism "We're one, but we are not the same."-Bono, U2Once I was in a train station waiting for a train with a friend. Here To Stay I am disturbed by the tendency of some people to view Christianity as a trend rather than a way of life. Some take it to the next level and try to make it some sort of a secret club. How to Hear the Voice of God In this series I would like to take you through the Word of God to show you how we can all clearly hear the voice of God. I would also like to show you how to train yourself in hearing and being led by the voice of God. Loving Your Neighbors If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. Anamchara - The Value of Ritual Let me explain my approach to the practice of ritual. For me ritual is an act of presence. Echos Transition Echo was a flea-bitten gray horse, with brown speckles everywhere, and crystal clear hairs in her mane and tail. We met in October, 1976, when she was a broodmare on an Arabian farm in New York State. How Its Always Now How do we feel the fullness of life itself? We have to go underneath the busy mind. And go into that deep sense of being itself. Forgiveness "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you." Ephesians 4:32, NIVI know, I always use animal photos in my visual aids and use them as examples in my writings but they are my gift and my passion! Besides, they can always show us how forgiveness works, can't they? You can be angry with them and they'll still shower you with love. A Broken and Contrite Heart "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise." Psalm 51:17, NIVWhat an interesting week this last week has been. Enough Warm-ups, Already! Among those arriving to the stadium early were two old timers: a husband and wife who always attended these events, and who were former runners themselves. In fact, they were world-class champions whose races were the stuff of legends. The Success of Servanthood "Who being in the very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant." Philippians 2: 6-7, NIVSince the Ashley Smith and Brian Nichols incident (amazing how God works!), I've been thinking about what servanthood really means. Home of God The first hymn of Isha Upanishad says - whatever living beings inhabit the world here, God resides in all of them; enjoy what is given by Him and don't seek other's wealth. All religious people believe in God, who resides in heaven. Connect with Spirit Spirit - All Around Us, All of Us, Every One of UsANY time we connect with something or someone, we're also connected with Spirit (also known as God, the Universe, Higher Power, the Source). While our personal definition of Spirit is unique, when we connect with that Spirit it immediately connects us with something outside of ourselves. People Fail in Life Because They Do Not Plan Life is growth. For many people life is like a merry go round. Allowing Joy "Ask and it shall be given" is a phrase we have all heard. I believe instead, "Ask and find yourself worthy of receiving. The Springtime of Peace The deeper beauty of spring is its process. In winter's last days, as the sun warms the earth, each root and branch awakens to the patterned memory of who it is and what it can be. Who Is He? "What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?" --MATTHEW 22:42, NCVAfter three years of ministry, hundreds of miles, thousands of miracles, and innumerable teachings, Jesus asks, "Who?" Jesus bids the people to ponder not what He has done, but who He is. It's the ultimate question of the Christ: Whose Son is He? Is He the Son of God or the sum of our dreams? Is He a figment of our imagination? When we ask that question about Santa, the answer is the culmination of our desires. Oh, God. What Do I Do Now? Uh, oh. I'm in trouble now. See You At Midnight: Strategy For Terrific Speed To Greatness! The gate of every year is the begining of that year; the gate of every month is the begining of that month; the gate of every week is the begining of that week; the gate of every day is the wee hours (from 12midnight) of that day. Are you presently STRANDED or STAGNANT in your journey in life? It is perhaps because you're locked out by a gate-keeper, from entering into fulfilment and you don't even know. Losing Control One of the most frightening things about melting from a normal, Solid, ego-based lifestyle, to a more Liquid, dynamic, spiritual one is that some concepts that you always assumed to be sound and good and true, start to lose their solidity. The very glue that holds together this solid, stable world begins to lose its cohesion. |
